About
Golfers Against Cancer

Golfers Against Cancer (GAC) was started in the summer of 1997 by members of the Deerwood Club in Kingwood,Texas. The group was founded to show support to a Deerwood member and assistant pro who both had been diagnosed with cancer at the time.
GAC’s first fundraising golf tournament was held in 1997 and it generated $80,000.All of the expenses in 1997 were paid for by two funding families that year which continues as a GAC core belief allowing new supporters to know their contributions go directly to cancer research.
GAC and the Dinners for Cancer
Research across the country have a vision where our friends and family never worry again about cancer. As we finalize our 2007 efforts, we are approaching $16 million raised since 1997 – including matching funds and after all expenses – to fund specific cancer research projects that lead to saving lives.
Our mission is to raise as much money as possible to fund promising cancer research projects that result in savings lives. We are dedicated to raising these funds as an all-volunteer organization where virtually all of our fund-raising efforts go directly to benefit cancer research versus administrative costs.
Boston’s GAC Dinner 2006
The First Annual GAC Boston Dinner was held on October 4, 2006. Nearly $200,000 was raised at the dinner to benefit Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Below is an update on how the funds raised have helped the Cancer Center since October 2006:
Funds from first Golfers Against Cancer event were used to support translational research and a clinical trial targeted at finding a new way to treat one of the most resistant forms of breast cancer. GAC support was critical, as it provided seed money for this project and enabled the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center to secure additional funding for this project from the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute and biotechnology companies. The success of the research program is evidenced by the  clinical trial
Boston's GAC Dinner 2007
The Second Annual GAC Boston Dinner was held October 10, 2007. Nearly $175,000 was raised the dinner to benefit Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Below is an update on how the funds raised will be used:
Support from the second Golfers Against Cancer event will be applied to basic and translational research the most common genetic abnormality in breast cancer. This abnormality relates to a gene called p53 that involved in both hereditary and nonhereditary breast cancer. The mutated p53 gene plays a role in about of all non-hereditary breast cancers. Additionally, patients who inherit defective p53 gene develop a syndrome, termed Li-Fraumeni syndrome, which includes a dramatically elevated risk of developing cancer the breast, as well as other organs. Previous research has pointed to multiple possible functions for p53 tumor development, but it has not clear exactly why p53 has such a dramatic effect in promoting human cancer. The Cancer Center’s multi-faceted research effort, including laboratory-based studies and translational studies involving patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome,
 is to attract future
initiated at the Cancer Center – with GAC support – will soon be open and available to patients at several additional cancer centers throughout the country.  funding and promises to make important advances in this field. Understanding how p53 functions will potentially lead to new treatments breast cancer and many other human cancers.
